No Room for a Utility Room? – Think Again!

by Vitrocsa john Webmaster

Having a separate utility room is a great asset for any property. It’s a place to house washing machines and dryers, a place to hang coats and store outdoor footwear and can also double as an extension of your kitchen.

Unfortunately, many properties don’t have the luxury of such a space and unless you’re planning to extend or remodel your property you’ve probably already accepted that you don’t have the room for a separate utility.

However, with clever use of space, it is possible to create a mini utility within most homes; even if it is just a place to hide away appliances, coats and shoes.

Section Off Part of Your Kitchen

If you have a large kitchen, one way to create a utility is to section part of it off by building a stud partition wall. The utility can be linked to the kitchen via an open archway or it can be partitioned off with a cavity sliding door to save on space. If you want to keep a sense of openness, cavity sliding glass doors may be the best option as they will still muffle the sound of the appliances when closed while retaining light and airiness.

Utilise Cupboards and the Space under the Stairs

If there’s no room to add a utility to your kitchen, you may be able to fit a utility cupboard into an existing space under your stairs or in your hallway cupboard. Of course, you will need to have access to electricity, water and drainage to make this work.

Where space is tight, stacking your appliances or investing in a washer-dryer will help to make the most of a tall narrow space. If you have the room to place the appliances side-by-side, add a worktop to give you room to store your laundry products and to enable you to fold your laundry when dry. Adding hooks to the back of the door will give you somewhere to hang your coats.

Convert your Garage

Many of us have garages which rarely house a car, but which have become a storage area or dumping ground. Depending on the space you have available, you could install your washing machine and dryer in a corner, or you can turn the whole garage into a spacious utility room.

Move Your Utility Upstairs or to the Bathroom

While many of us think of utility rooms as being a ground floor space, locating your utility upstairs could be a solution, especially if you mainly use it for laundry and ironing.

If you have a spare room which is rarely used, one solution is to change it to a laundry and dressing room – it will make putting laundry away a breeze. If not, you may have room to install your appliances in an existing cupboard or to stack them in the bathroom.

Think Outside the Box

Creating a utility room when you’re short on space can often require a little lateral thinking, but it is possible to have a separate area for your washer and dryer without resorting to building an extension.
