NGO - Their Definition And Scope Of Work

by Kanan James NGO INDIA

For those elderly people who have no place of their own to stay or are not comfortable staying in their homes either alone or with their children, there are quite a few other alternatives available. Today there are several NGOs and charitable organisations who have established senior citizen homes for looking after these elderly people. Staying in these homes has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Some of the advantages include assistance and companionship, the two things that every elderly person needs, basic health care, ensuring a routine undisrupted life etc. Disadvantages include staying away from their near and dear ones, expenses involved might be more, absence of specialised and personalised care etc. However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, most of which can be solved by just looking at some of the options available and availing of them. However, the biggest advantage which makes most of the other disadvantages seem insignificant is the availability of round the clock senior citizen health care.

NGOs are however, not involved in only looking after senior citizens. They perform a host of other charitable work, support many seemingly impossible causes and are involved in a lot of other humanity benefitting work. Thus NGOs are defined to be organisations which

·         Work for the upliftment of the society as a whole,

·         Advocate human rights,

·         Promote environmental, social and political changes,

·         Play a critical role in the development of the society,

·         Initiate participation of the citizens in socially beneficial work,

·         Help to improve communities and

·         Can either work on a broad scale globally or a small scale locally.

However, the work of a non profit organisation is not as simple or as little as it seems. There are no limitations and boundaries to what an NGO can do. That is probably one of the main reasons why inspite of having a long and turbulent history they have been able to prove their worth every time a situation has demanded the same from them.

Primarily the work of every non-profit organisation can be divided into 6 prominent roles:

·         Infrastructure development and operation: This refers to the senior citizen retirement homes, orphanages, refugee shelters etc. that they build after seeking land and developing them as per their requirements.

·         Pilot project initiation: Their ability to support, innovate, demonstrate and pilot government projects for a specified time limit helps in the faster completion of the same since they are not held back by bureaucratic tapes and other pitfalls faced by the government.

·         Facilitate communication: BY acting as the mouth of the various strata of the society, they are able to facilitate better communication between the government, the higher echelons of the society and those who really need it like the poor, the downtrodden and the other disadvantaged sectors.

·         Training and technical assistance: Along with the government non-government organisations especially NGO India, help to provide technical assistance to people who are poor but talented enough to warrant this assistance.

·         Research, monitor and evaluate: They help to conduct surveys regarding many essential social behavioural patterns, consensus monitoring etc., so as to be able to help the government formulate better plans to eradicate the financial divisions of the society.

·         Being with and for the poor: They are the spokespersons for the poor and the downtrodden and act as their ombudsmen.

Being associated with an NGO is thus highly rewarding and motivating for the job of an NGO is immensely challenging and highly satisfying. NGOs are organisations which deserve every bit of the appreciation that they get.
