NFC Tag vs QR Code - A Comparison
These days, everyone is trying to open the virtual world up to us. Whether it's through Native mobile apps or browser-based technologies, there's always something that can help you bridge the gap between reality and your screen. The concept of this bridge has greatly matured since QR codes first came out in Japan in 1994. But what are QR codes, you ask?
QR Codes (URLs)
QR codes were first developed by Denso Wave to track parts in vehicles. They then found consumers could use their scanners to read the barcodes and get information about certain products/services. There are now several types of data that can be encoded into QR Codes.
QR codes can store the following:
A link (URL) to a webpage, file or location
Text & numbers
Phone number
Email address
NFC Tags vs QR Codes - Which Is Best?
As with any new technology, you need to know if it's right for your business. Unfortunately, there isn't a simple answer to this question. Like most things, both NFC tags and QR Codes have pros and cons.
Pros of using NFC Tags:
Easy to mass produce
Longer read range than QR codes (up to 5 cm)
More secure than QR codes since only the tag owner can set the link/data
More secure than QR Codes since the tag owner controls who can access their tags
Android Beam allows you to instantly transfer information from your phone to another NFC-enabled device
Pros of using QR Codes:
Anyone with a smartphone can use it without needing to download an app or buy a reader
You have more space for data & links - up to 1,369 characters vs. 40 characters
You can save a QR code as a photo and use it as wallpaper for quick access at any time
Which format should you choose?
For a lot of business owners, NFC tags are the best choice because they provide more security. If your business is big enough to have an app or if you want to implement a mobile marketing campaign, QR codes are the obvious choice.
So which format will you use?
I personally find NFC Tags more convenient due to their longer range and security. What do you think about NFC tags vs QR codes? Which one would you use? Let us know in the comment section below!
