New Croydon Public Artworks Explore Issues Of Gender And Power

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

One of the many aspects of Croydon that has sometimes been overlooked down the years is the town’s rich cultural life. After all, it is this part of south London that has given us such musical giants as Adele, Stormzy and Amy Winehouse, courtesy of institutions and movements like rap, grime, dubstep and the BRIT School. Today, Croydon also remains home to vibrant contemporary art spaces such as RISEgallery and Turf Projects, as well as many digital, media and software firms.

Well, another sign that Croydon is definitely a ‘living and breathing’ borough as far as the arts and culture are concerned, is an initiative that has recently seen public artworks displayed exploring issues of gender and power.

You may have seen the billboards yourself on Croydon High Street and in Lower Addiscombe – and as the Sutton & Croydon Guardian has reported, these are the works of French artist Martin Firrell, in collaboration with Clear Channel UK.

Challenging questions asked by these thought-provoking creations

For those who have resided in the borough for years, as well as many people still on the lookout for a suitable Penthouse For Sale In Croydon, there’s no question that projects like Firrell’s play their part in making this area of the British capital such a fascinating and rewarding place to live, work and play.

Clear Channel UK is an out of home media owner, with CEO Justin Cochrane commenting that the organisation’s nationwide network of digital advertising screens was uniquely positioned to serve as an intriguing “art gallery” for Martin’s work.

He added: “We’re proud to be supporting this project that opens up public conversation on progressiveness and promotes Fairness – one of Clear Channel’s core values.”

Firrell stated: “I believe men and women regard power differently and I want to ‘open up the layers of that difference’ in front of the public.

“My residency with Clear Channel makes that possible. If you can create debate, eventually change will follow.”
