Networking Mistakes MBA Aspirants Cans Avoid

by Roma Arora Freelance Blogger at IILM
Networking is an important aspect when it comes to developing your job prospects. Building contacts and sources who can help you out when required always proves useful and practical. Finding a job in this lightning-fast world is a hectic and strenuous activity, and so we need people who can help us to choose a particular domain or can recommend us to any firm. If you can find the right people in time and talk to them, finding a job becomes easy but that is the difficult part. Look for contacts in few of the good management colleges in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. Unfortunately, knowing whom to meet and what to talk about is something that we cannot always comprehend, thus making several rookie mistakes. In this article, we will talk about the networking mistakes that should be avoided at all cost.

Being a little ‘too’ casual:
Our contacts are often built through our mutual friends. We should be aware that we do not make it ‘too’ casual as it is a business contact after all. Do not curse or send casual texts; rather make it look like you have developed good professional skills and ethics. To know how to develop a good professional relationship with someone is one of the key aspects of networking.

Do not come out as an obnoxious guy:
Everyone is entitled to have a personal life, where there are not outward influences. Do not be the guy who takes away their mental peace. Calling someone again and again at unusual timing, or texting repeatedly can turn people off and rightly so. Have patience, try being polite and wait for them to revert to your query or feedback; something will surely turn up with time.

Choosing quantity over quality:
Networking does not only mean building contacts but building reliable contacts. Knowing a lot of people and collecting a number of business cards will not help you in achieving something. In order to make dependable contacts know the people, you are talking to. Choose your sources from the best management schools in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai and then do your research on them, understand their credibility and then move forward. Only the right people can get you to the right place.

Appreciate the people who introduced you:
One common mistake people make while networking is that they forget the people who introduced them to their sources. People helped you out of generosity, therefore, taking them for granted can be a mistake. A person who can introduce to a source once can again help you in the future. Make sure you keep these friends close and happy.
