A Dental implant is a type of surgery that involves positioning of metal posts or frames into the jawbone below your gums. After placing these frames, the dentist then mounts replacement teeth onto them.A dental implant is an artificial tooth made of metal usually titanium (a tooth root). A dental implant doesn't come loose like a denture. These implants benefit overall oral health because they are not anchored to other teeth, like bridges.

How these Dental Implants Work?

Because implants are placed into to the jawbone, they provide constant support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges mounted to these implants wouldn’t slip or shift inside your mouth when chewing food and speaking with someone helping the patient to feel his teeth to be more natural compared to the traditional bridges or dentures.

For some people, who are suffering from, poor ridges, sore spots or gagging ordinary dentures or bridges are simply uncomfortable. Additionally, the ordinary bridges need to be attached on either side of the teeth leaving the space left by the missing tooth.

To receive the new implants, you need to have healthy gums, mouth and sufficient bone to support the implant. Remember, a patient must also take care of the implants by keeping them clean and healthy all the time.Careful oral hygiene and consistent dental follow-ups are necessary for long-term success of dental implants.

Typically, Implants are more costly than other tooth replacement treatments.

Two types of implants are known to be safe, that are:

  • Endosteal implants are directly placed into the jawbone through surgery. After few days, when the neighboring gum tissue has healed, again a surgery is performed to attach a post to the original implant. In the end, an artificial tooth is placed to the individual post, or grouped on a bridge or denture.
  • Sub-periosteal implants are the ones which are made of metal frame that is attached to the jawbone just under the gum tissues. As the gums heal, the frame slowly gets attached to the jawbone. Posts, which are connected to the frame, extend out through the gums. Artificial teeth are later mounted to these posts.

Advantages Of Implants

Some of the benefits of Dental Implants are:

  1. Dental Implants don't shift or slip, making you feel like your natural teeth.
  2. Implants are easy to clean similar to your natural teeth, so you don’t need to take them out frequently.
  3. Implants don't depend on neighboring teeth for additional support; hence, no tooth structure is lost, compared to bridge or denture.
  4. Implants also help in preventing of the teeth shifting, maintaining jawbone and the shape of your face.
  5. Implants are known to be an ideal cosmetic answer for missing teeth, allowing you to eat and speak easily.

A Perfect Candidate For A Dental Implant

Person with healthy gums, and having enough bone support is a perfect candidate for a dental implant. Nevertheless, your jawbone can be developed preceding to the dental implant surgery in case where your bone height is not enough to support an implant. Chronic diseases like diabetes and leukemia can hinder the healing process of an implant.

Post Dental Implant Care

Anyone would want that implants should last a lifetime, only if you follow few instructions as advised by your dentist that include -professional cleanings, visiting your dents regularly and maintaining a healthy mouth. Brush your teeth regularly at least 2 times a day and floss on a daily basis, careful clean surrounding areas of the implants to keep healthy gum tissue.
