Nearly Half A Million Smokers ‘will Quit Due To Menthol Ban’

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Here at £1 Vape, we’re always eager to learn of how cigarette users are being helped to ditch the habit. It therefore intrigued us to read about a recent study that suggests this month’s ban on menthol and capsule cigarettes could prompt the start of much healthier lifestyles for many Britons.

As reported by the Talking Retail website and elsewhere, more than 1,000 UK menthol smokers were quizzed, with almost four in 10 of them indicating that the ban – which came into effect on 20th May – would prompt them to quit tobacco altogether.

If this finding was replicated across the UK’s smoking population, it would equate to more than 450,000 smokers quitting, or about one in 20. That’s quite a dramatic impact from just one change in the law, but could be encouraging for public health in this country.

But that’s not all we’re learning as menthol cigarettes bite the dust

Breaking down the figures, it was especially fascinating to us how influential the availability of fresh menthol e-liquids was on how smokers intended to react to the ban on menthol cigarettes.

The study found that 18% of menthol smokers in the UK planned to use menthol vaping to help them to stop smoking. A further 10% said that they would take the ‘cold turkey’ approach to quitting, while 5% signalled that nicotine replacement therapies, such as nicotine gum or patches, would be their favoured method for saying goodbye to their smoking days for good.

In an indication, however, of the scale of the challenge of attempting to persuade British smokers to switch to healthier alternatives, 56% of menthol smokers said that they would continue to use cigarettes by simply switching to regular cigarettes or rolling tobacco instead.

2.4% of respondents even claimed that they had stockpiled menthol cigarettes in anticipation of the ban. But if you’re one of those people, what will you do once your reserves run out?

Consider the healthier path in 2020

With the same study also discovering that just shy of 300,000 smokers were presently quitting as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and 29% of smokers having stated that they would now consider quitting shortly, it’s fair to say that a lot of people are being motivated by the UK’s current dominant public health crisis to call time on their habit.

So, why not take a little time to browse our extensive selection of fresh menthol e-liquids – including the likes of Ice Menthol, Raspberry Menthol and Blueberry Menthol – right here at £1 Vape?

As Public Health England (PHE) has advised, vaping is considered to be at least 95% less harmful than smoking, which should go some way to showing just what a positive step quitting could be for your health. In short, you really can adopt a lifestyle that will be gentler on your body in 2020, while not forcing you to miss out on those familiar menthol pleasures!
