Natural Fillings are Best for Quilts - Naturally

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

Many of us prefer our quilts to be filled with natural products such as wool, down or feathers rather than synthetic alternatives such as microfibre and polyester.

But what are the benefits of natural fillings and how do they compare to each other. We take a look at a range of quilts from the traditional wool doona to the exotic Mulberry Silk filled quilts.

Wool Quilts

Traditional Australian wool quilts have been popular for years and with good reason. Not only are they made with natural fillings but the woollen filling is breathable and helps to regulate the body temperature to keep you from feeling hot and sweaty when you sleep.

A wool quilt is also a great option for anyone who suffers from allergies as the wool is resistant to dust mites and if cared for and aired properly will prevent bacteria, mould and other allergens from developing.

Add in the fact that wool is easy to care for, durable and long-lasting and you can see why it’s popularity as a bedding material continues to grow.

Down Quilts

Made from the light and fluffy under feathers of waterfowl, down quilts are great insulators that help to regulate your body temperature.

Good quality down is sourced from mature birds from Europe and North America as their down provides high fill power to ensure that the quilts are soft and full. Down-filled quilts help to draw excess moisture away from the skin to prevent overheating and sweating.

The best down quilts are incredibly warm and cosy, and yet they are extremely light and so have a luxurious feel. However, if you do have allergies always look for down quilts that specify that impurities have been removed.

Feather Quilts

Another traditional choice, feather quilts are a relatively cost-effective option if you prefer a natural filling. Heavier than a down quilt, they give an extra feeling of weight and cosiness while helping to keep you cool as you sleep.

Contrary to opinion, feather filled quilts are suitable for people with allergies as the feathers will have been checked to ensure that they are free from impurities.

Organic Mulberry Silk Quilts

Perhaps a lesser known option, mulberry silk quilts are luxurious and light. The quilt tends to mould to the body to provide a lightweight but warm covering with no cold spots.

They are the perfect option for anyone who tends to feel suffocated by heavier quilts and are also suitable for allergy sufferers as they are naturally hypoallergenic. While they may require a significant financial investment, with proper care, they can last for up to twenty years.

Which One Will You Choose?

Quilts with natural fillings will help you to get a good night’s sleep. But which one will you choose? Ultimately it will come down to personal preference and of course your budget, but we believe natural fillings are best – naturally!
