Located near Sirohi district, Mount Abu is the only hill station in the desert state of Rajasthan. Lying in the Aravalli range at a height of more than 1200 meters above ocean level, Mount Abu is a frequented by tourists trying to find some respite from the scorching heat waves of the desert. Its highest point, ‘Guru Shikhar’, resides at more than 1700 meters above sea level and is known as the spot where Maharishi Vashistha spent his last days. Dilwara Jain Temples - Lying at a distance of about 2.5 km from the main town of Mount Abu, the Dilwara Jain temples were established between the 11th and 13th century. The decorative carvings and the immaculate stone laying system makes it amongst the most delightful pilgrimage places in the country. The complex comprises of five smaller temples viz. Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pithalpur, Parshvanath and Mahavir Swami, which are devoted to the prominent Jain Tirthankars and  carry their own significance in the Jain community. The temple ceilings are covered in lotus shaped engravings and folklores depicting various scenarios from the Hindu and Jain mythology. The temple sees a huge tourist footfall every year.

 

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary - The forested area located amidst the Aravalli range was declared a wildlife sanctuary during the 1980s. This massive piece of wildlife haven is spread in an area of more than 280 sq. km. The forest mainly consists of sub tropical trees with hints large predators like tiger and lion inhabiting the jungle, though the only type of big cats that you’d see are leopards. If you’re a nature lover, the sanctuary is a fantastic place to explore the natural beauty and local flora and fauna. Some of the wild animal species that you can spot in the sanctuary are sambhar, wild hog, wild cats, bear, langur, mongoose, pangolin and few wild dogs. These jungles are also home to over 250 varieties of bird species.

 

Nakki Lake - Counted amongst the biggest attractions in the hill station, Nakki Lake is ancient and sacred to the masses. As the legends say, it were the Gods who dug out the land using their nails to create a shelter against the wrath of evil Asura Bashkali. Nonetheless, the Nakki Lake is one of the best places to enjoy a relaxing picnic with your family and friends.
