The kitchen is one of the most important areas of your home to be designed, both from a safety and functional perspective. It is the layout of the kitchen that determines its efficiency in allowing you to prepare a stress free meal alone or in the company of friends and family. Traditional Kitchen Layouts were designed to adhere to the principles of work triangle, which basically referred to the placement of the stovetop, sink and refrigerator to form a rough equilateral triangle. The L shaped, U shaped and G shaped kitchen layouts in homes catered to this principle, and depending on the space available were modified to include islands that provide additional counter space and storage space. 

Small kitchen designs very often gravitated towards the galley shaped with all appliances mounted on one wall and the sink on the other wall to make maximum use of space. Most commercial kitchens use the galley shape, which makes it easy for the chef to move from one appliance to another since they are so closely grouped together. However with Modular Kitchen Designs based on the open concept that allow a connection with the rest of the house gaining in popularity, galleys are losing favour. 

One of the latest kitchen layouts to gain popularity is the organization of the place into work zones, provided you have the space. Countertops, cabinets, furniture, storage and fixtures are arranged as per work zones. For instance placing the dishwasher and garbage disposal bins next to the sink along with cleaning supplies converts this area into a cleaning zone. Similarly remodelling the area around the stove top allows it to function as an effective area for flame cooking with all spices, utensils and Kitchen Appliances required available easily at hand.
