by Richelle Mandy Spine and Neuro Surgery Hospital

Dr. V. S. Mehta best neurosurgeon in Gurgaon India explains what a craniotomy is, why it is performed and what risks are involved.

What is craniotomy?

Craniotomy, a technique normally performed under general anesthesia, includes the surgical removal of part of the cranium. “During the procedure, we remove a part of the bone from the cranium that’s called the ‘bone flap’,” says best neurologist India. “This temporary method of opening the skull offers us access to the brain, so we can either remove a tumor or deal with the patient.” Before the surgery, the surgeon will shave the region of the scalp and make an incision.  To remove of the bone flap, the surgeon first drills a hole in the skull at the perfect area of the brain being handled. Once the doctor has completed surgery at the affected area of the brain, he or she replaces the bone flap. That is commonly performed with plates, screws or wires.

When would a craniotomy be performed?

“Best neurologist at Paras Hospital Gurgaon and team primarily performs craniotomies for brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and aneurysms,” says Dr. V.S. Mehta Best Neurologist India. “But, this type of surgery may be used for numerous different issues affecting the brain.” neurosurgeons perform craniotomies to allow them to deal with a variety of brain conditions and injuries. Some of the ones most common includes:

  • Brain tumors
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Hemorrhage or hematomas
  • Aneurysms
  • Damaged tissue
  • Abscesses
  • Severe nerve or facial pain
  • Epilepsy

What are the alternatives to craniotomy?

  • Stereotactic biopsy through a small hollow (burr hollow) inside the skull. This can be used to achieve a prognosis and may enable the drainage of some fluid from a tumor cyst to alleviate raised intracranial pressure.
  • Radiotherapy. This can be brought to the complete mind or to the place of and surrounding the tumor. No longer all tumors are amenable to radiotherapy.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery. This includes blasting the tumor with a single treatment session of concentrated radiotherapy. It is able to be useful for small tumors, as well as deep tumors that won't be amenable to surgical treatment. The gamma knife is the best-known system.
  • Chemotherapy. These can be given in the oral form, or into the bloodstream (intravenous). Not all tumors are amenable to chemotherapy.

What happens during the operation?

An incision (cut) is made within the scalp, a skin flap is peeled back, burr holes are drilled in the cranium, after which a piece of bone (“bone flap”) is cut out like an entice-door to reveal the brain underneath. The surgeon then begins work: to close the connection between a blood vessel and an aneurysm with a small clip, to get rid of all or a part of a tumor, to dispose a blood clot, or to alleviate strain at the brain. The bone flap is then replaced and the scalp is stitched together.

The bone flap is normally fixed into place with small metal screws to prevent movement and inspire higher recuperation. The operation takes approximately 4-6 hours. This includes the time to move you from the ward to the running theatre, supplying you with the anesthetic, the operation itself, and the time you spend recovering from the anesthetic.
