MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – For nine years, the Fairy Godmother Initiative in Milford has been giving out free bridesmaid dresses to teenagers heading to prom and other formal events.

Myra Roldan, who is the brainchild of The Fairy Godmother Initiative said, “We get girls from not only Connecticut, we get them from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Long Island and Jersey. They will travel.” Every year hundreds of girls will pick out a dress.

Myra says parents and teens reach out months before the event, “From parents who are in difficult situations. Either they lost their job, lost a spouse. There is some kind of life change going on and their kid is either a junior or senior that is going to prom and they can’t afford that dress.”

The volunteer-based organization receives generous donations with one store donating more than 200 dresses. “There is a misconception that all of our dresses are going to be used and outdated. When they walk in their eyes just light up,” added Roldan.

There is only one requirement to getting a free prom dress, young women will be asked to pay it forward by donating a small personal care item like a toothbrush or deodorant that is collected and brought to a local shelter. Roldan said the Fairy Godmother Initiative has created a ripple effect giving back and making dreams come true.”Seeing their faces light up and just give me that hug and the smiles that’s payment enough,” added Roldan.
