Menstruation and Pregnancy : Do They Ever Run Parallel?

by Veraaj Verma writer
A female body can do wonders! The science behind a new life evolving in the womb is beyond imaginations. A healthy menstruating woman is considered to be fertile, while it is said menstruation and pregnancy cannot run parallel, or in simpler terms, a woman cannot conceive while menstruating.

Though the chances of pregnancy lie on the lower side during periods, they aren’t negligible! It depends on your menstrual cycle length and the ovulation day. Let’s debunk the mystery with logical reasons surrounding the same.

Can a woman get pregnant during her periods?

A woman’s likelihood to get pregnant may fall or rise depending completely upon the ovulation cycle she is going through. The average female monthly cycle may vary from 21 to 29 days in normal cases, while it may extend to 30-40 days or even longer in case of irregular cycles. The actual probability of getting pregnant on the first and second day of menstruation drops down to nearly zero, as it is the least fertility period. While the rate starts to rise on and after the 3rd day, even if the female is still bleeding (including excessive flow).

The reason of lower pregnancy rate in the initial days is that the ovulation period is still several days away, however, if your cycle is shorter and the ovulation period is nearly closer (early ovulation) to your menstruating date, you may have the higher chances.

Can a woman get pregnant right after periods?

When your period's end, you range closer to the fertility window and the ovulation tenure. In this case, having sex right after your periods can get you pregnant quicker. Though it is always better to check your ovulation day and plan the intercourse accordingly.

How does pregnancy occur after few days of having sex?

A sperm, when entered in a female’s body, can live 2, 3, and up to 5 days. It stays protected in the fallopian tube till the eggs are produced and collide with the sperm. The process sometimes takes just a day, and sometimes need a few days.

How does conception occur?

It seems like a miracle with no explanations! Conception requires a meeting of male’s sperm with a female’s egg. it happens when a woman’s ovary releases an egg, the egg can live between 12-24 hours while the sperm can stay up to 5 days, ovulation is basically the time when an egg is released for fertilization if the sperm is living up in the uterus, a collision happens and a woman gets pregnant.

Ovulation period is generally between 12-14 days of the cycle. Day one of the cycle can be counted from the first day of the bleeding. Days from 12-14 are considered fertile and good to plan a pregnancy. In case if a woman having a shorter menstruation cycle, the ovulation day shrinks to day 7 and she will be most fertile during the 7-9th day.

If you are preventing a pregnancy, have protected sex near the ovulation dates. To stay risk-free, it is advisable to always get involved in a protected sex, it is not just a recommendation for preventing pregnancy but also, a solution to protect yourself from the unwanted sexually transmitted infections.
