As the world enters the next phase of the Coronavirus pandemic, nurse shortage, burnout, and short-staffed hospitals have increased throughout the U.S. Hospitals were already experiencing a shortage of nurses pre-COVID, and the pandemic has exacerbated this nursing shortage. It’s estimated 1 in 5 U.S. hospitals face dire staffing shortages.
NBC News addressed the crisis in a recent clip featuring MedPro International Executive Vice President of International Operations, and President for the American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment (AAIHR) Patty Jeffrey. The news clip highlighted the Coronavirus Pandemic and how U.S. Hospitals are seeking nurses from foreign countries to fill critical staffing needs.
"All (AAIHR) association members are hearing the same thing, it’s consistent. When are the nurses going to get here and why it’s taking so long,” states Jeffrey. Hospitals in nearly every state are signing healthcare agreements with nurses from the Philippines, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria. 20% of nurses working in the U.S. today are immigrants.
Patty Jeffrey estimates there are 5,000 nurses in overseas countries ready to begin work in the U.S. The only item standing in their way is their final interview at the U.S. embassy. AAIHR and other organizations continue to work with the Department of State to expedite the visa healthcare approval process for nurses. As President of AAIHR, Patty’s priority is addressing the U.S. nursing crisis to the legislators and State Department in Washington, D.C., and leading the charge for change.
Three MedPro International nurses currently working in U.S. facilities were featured in the video clip - Manoloa “Nacho” Fransico Pangilinan, Alexis-Jane Hermio-Nees, and Jorge Almeida Neri all arrived in the U.S. in 2021, have treated COVID-19 patients yet remain optimistic and passionate about their mission during the healthcare crisis.
