Meditation—How to Start

Meditation in Point Pleasant is a technique that is intended to encourage focused attention and a heightened state of awareness.  It has many benefits, which include relief from anxiety and stress, and getting rid of any unnecessary thoughts.  Many will take a few minutes each day to meditate.  You do not have to over-complicate why you want to meditate.  Meditation is just relaxing your mind and body and letting your mind be free of all anxieties.

If you are new to meditation, the first thing to do is find an area that is distraction-free.  Make sure that the television and radio are off, and the area is as quiet as you can get it.  The reason it needs to be quiet is so you can focus.  Some add a scented candle or incense to help balance your experience.  You should also turn out any lights or at least dim them to help you concentrate.

Some sit on the floor while others prefer to sit on the chair.  You can also use a mediation cushion, called a zafus.  It is a circular cushion that makes it more comfortable to sit on the ground or floor.  You want to keep your back as straight as you can, so you do not lose your focus on your energy.  You can also use a sofa cushion or an old pillow.  When you sit, you should do it cross-legged. 

When you do meditation in Brick, make sure that you are wearing comfortable clothes.  You don’t want to wear constrictive clothes like jeans that could interrupt your meditation thinking.  There is no set time you should do meditation.  Some do it to help them calm down if they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed.  When you are a beginner, it might be easier for you to concentrate when you are already relaxed, such as first thing in the morning before you start your day.  The reason is that sometimes as a beginner, you find it harder to concentrate if you are stressed.

You want to make sure that you practice your meditation in Point Pleasant long enough to achieve that peacefulness.  You don’t want to break your concentration to check the time so you can use a timer.  Set it for the time you want to meditate, whether it is for five or ten minutes, or longer. As you become more experienced you can increase the time. 

Although most sit cross-legged, you can put your legs in whatever position is comfortable for you.  Make sure you are sitting straight to be able to concentrate on your breathing as you inhale and exhale.  You can hold your hands by your knees or fold them in your lap.  Whichever is more comfortable for you.  Tilt your chin like you are looking down with your eyes open or closed.  Tilting your head this way will help with your breathing also.
