Masterbatches: A Colorful Alternative Over Pigments

by Deepika Olive SEO Executive

About the concentrated Mixture:

Masterbatches are concentrated mixture of pigments that are used in plastic industries for adding color to the elements. It can be both in solid or liquid form that are used in coloring raw plastics. Master batches allow coloring raw polymer economically during its manufacturing process. Master batches are solid products where pigments and additives are mixed at high concentration levels for the carrier materials.  The carrier material is then made compatible with main plastic and is blended with the plastic during molding process. As the result the final product of the plastic material gains color.

Reasons to choose Masterbatch:

We all get interacted with a colored plastic material on a regular basis as we are surrounded by polymer products. Very few of us actually get to know that from where these products gain their colors. This is a strong reason why many of us don’t articulate the fact that there is a difference between pigments and masterbatch. There is a huge difference between pigments and masterbatches. Pigments are solid, dry coloring substances that are suspended in liquids to make paints and other forms of dyes. Whereas, master batches are more advanced form coloring material where specific concentration of pigments along with polymer additives. As a person who is not aware of all the facts about a master batch may feel that adopting color pigment mixture is more convenient over the masterbatch. The reason for adopting a masterbatch can be based on various strong reasons that we hold over color pigments. That is the reason why more and more plastic and synthetic fiber producing companies are adopting master batches over pigments.

The reasons are mentioned below:
  • •    Masterbatches come in handy granule form that makes it more easy to use and store as compared to the colored pigments.
  • •    With the use of masterbatch the handling and feeding of the color components to the mixture during the manufacturing process is simple.
  • •    Pigments can potentially contaminate the adjacent manufacturing lines.
  • •    The color distribution in the final product is even and optimal with the use of masterbatch.
  • •    When pigment is used in the form of masterbatch the amount of pigment required becomes low due to dispersion chemistry.
  • •    Master batch offers better color consistency to the final product.
  • •    The chance of variation during the manufacturing process is nullified with the use of color masterbatches.

Masterbatches manufacturers are providing the polymer industry with more handy and convenient options to choose over color pigments. With more use of masterbatches the polymer industry has witnessed a change for good.
