MARILYN HAGERTY: Welcoming winter in ugly sweaters
The time has come for UND fans to rummage through their closets and find the ugliest sweater. It may win a prize during the basketball game at 2 p.m. Saturday between the UND women and Northern Iowa.
I have some pretty wild sweaters on my shelves, but I still am cooped up. So I am keeping track of the hoops scene by listening to the radio.
My favorite players keep moving on since I first started following UND basketball years ago in the old Hyslop setting. So far this season, I am especially interested in Mia Loyd, a senior. She has spunk.
We were supposed to have a second batch of snow around here this morning, Shirley. Recently when we had a dab, the people at St. Anne's Guest Home shared thoughts on the first snow of winter:
• "We would wear snow pants to school, but once we got there we had to take them off because we had to wear dresses in school."

• "We always heard that the angels were having a pillow fight when it first snowed."
Well, with December's snow arrival, Philip the Fly is nowhere around here. The pesky little creature drove me crazy for a long time. I think he left last week for Arizona.
I don't know about your city of Tucson, but here in Grand Forks people are getting everything decked out for Christmas.
Members of the Lions Clubs have been turning Lincoln Drive Park into a winter wonderland for the 14th season. It's open every evening now from 5:30 to 10 at the cost of $5 per car. And this year there are lasers adding Christmas colors to the string of 55 displays.
It takes a jungle full of Lions to create this Christmas fantasy, Shirley. Leading the way have been John Ramsey, Leon Comeau and Mike Coleman.
Lynne Roche, who is cultural and special events manager for the Grand Forks Park District, leads the way when it comes to Christmas decorating. She leaves one tree unturned at the Lincoln Park Clubhouse, Shirley. That is, she has an upside down tree in the array of trees this year.
Oh, and she has an orange tree.
They'll be on view for the public Dec.10-13 and Dec.17-20.
Along with the Lincoln Park Clubhouse, there are three more trees at Choice Fitness and another tree went up Monday in the King's Walk clubhouse.
Well, with the joy of the holidays surrounding us here in the northland, I send my love from the west bank of the Red River of the North.
Your sister, Marilyn.
P.S. Someone saw a license plate in a Hugo's parking lot that said: LUVSNO.
