Mangosteen: Is it a super fruit?
The Mangosteen is a small and also slow growing tree which grows to a
height of just 20 to 82 feet. It is native to the countries present in
the South East Asian countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, India and several
more since these trees require a warm and humid climate. Due to
increased demands these fruits are being grown in green houses in areas
like California.
The mangosteen has been used for centuries in
the countries where the mangosteen grows naturally. The knowledge
accumulated from these sources has constantly been passed down from one
generation to the next. When the Europeans began visiting these
countries, they were introduced to this exotic fruit which later came to
be known as the Mangosteen. It was mostly forgotten by the western
world until recently when the interest in this fruit was hiked due to
studies which are proving several beneficial properties that the fruits
are known to offer. Studies are trying to unlock all of the secrets of
this amazing fruit.
These days there is a wide spread scare due
to the knowledge of the capability of the free radicals to damage the
body. To counter these radicals we need antioxidants and mangosteen is
one of the best sources of antioxidants found naturally. Every second of
every day, our body is attacked by the free radicals which damage the
body whereas on the other hand the antioxidants work to make the immune
system strong enough to repair the cells before it undergoes cellular
degeneration.
There are several different types of antioxidants
that are known to men, and one among them are xanthones. These xanthones
are found in the outer covering of the mangosteen (pericarp). The outer
purple covering has an abundant quantity of xanthones present in it.
The natives knew that the pericarp contains some special properties and
hence they used it to heal infections. Now we know that it was due to
these xanthones that the healing occurred.
There are two kinds of
xanthones that have been found in the mangosteen fruit, Gamma Mangostin
and Alpha Mangostin. Biologically, these xanthones have been found to
have quite an impact on cardiovascular diseases as they are natural anti
– inflammatory, anti – viral and also antibiotic. These are considered
to be some of the most powerful antioxidants produced naturally.
Mangosteen
has been found to inhibit the production of ROS. Investigations have
suggested that the fruit has some strong anti – proliferation
properties. It is being looked at as a potential aid to chemotherapy and
hence the cure of cancer.
Mangosteen has been known to show
inhibitory action against organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It has time and again proven itself to being
effective in strengthening the immune system of the body. The
innumerable components found in the Mangosteen appear to make it an
important supplement to the body.
So far Mangosteen has been
considered safe for all of us to consume. Not much is known regarding
the safety precautions to be considered while consuming the Mangosteen
