Managing of Their Country's Territorial Integrity
Territorial
integrity is the most important aspect of any foreign policy that determines
the internal and external security of a state. There are both advantages and
disadvantages for a state while in the process of achieving a sense of
security. The advantage is that, the state gains the ability to defend itself
and exercise its superiority over other states. While as a disadvantage, other
states also look forward to increase their weapon and military capacity and
diminish the security achievements of their rivals to the minimum. Therefore,
for a state to maintain its own territorial integrity while not compromising
the security of other states is uncommon in the present context of the global
scenario. This chapter explores the security challenges Pakistan faces,
along with the sources and causes behind them. The sources of insecurity for
Pakistan are multidimensional, and therefore, the categorization has been done
elaborately. In addition, Pakistan’s security environment before and after the
September 2001 attacks is compared in the light of Pakistan’s foreign policy
before and after the attacks.
It is believed that
Pakistan’s future policy is very crucial and detrimental to not only their
security, but also to the international stability. The evolution of Pakistan in
the future will decide the interests of United States in trade and investment
in Pakistan. Pakistan, as a nation, has reached the stage where it is
automatically supposed to exercise policies to protect its interests that are
stable irrespective of any moral crisis or any other factor. In order to
preserve national integrity, Pakistan needs to develop and successfully
implement independent and concrete national and foreign policies. So far,
Pakistan has made significant efforts towards developing relations with other Muslim
countries, and being an Islamic ideology, has sought to promote the rights of
developing countries, particularly Muslim nations. While strengthening its
policies and foreign relations, Pakistan should also consider its economic
duties towards its citizens and also towards other countries. Keeping in mind
that Pakistan’s state framework is largely based on Islamic ideology, its
foreign policies need a fresh and renovated look that keep them synchronized
with the rapidly globalizing world. To adequately adjust its foreign policies
towards securing national interest and security, it is important to recognize
the sources and causes of insecurity in the current institutional framework of
the Pakistan state.
