Managed VPS Hosting VS Unmanaged VPS Hosting

by Will Smith Web Hosting

In the last few months we've received a few email questions about, and, in fact, have recently found ourselves pondering the pros and cons of having managed verses unmanaged VPS hosting. From strictly a monetary standpoint, many out there find themselves drawn to the thrifty option but that might just end up costing you in the long run. Let's take a look at both options below.

Managed VPS

With managed VPS hosting, the more expensive option of the two, don't think that extra expense is going to waste.

When you pay the agreed upon price for Managed VPS that includes everything. Management, monitoring, repairs, expert service and infrastructure are all covered. This makes it an especially appealing option for those out there that maybe do not know much about servers, those who would rather not be bothered with it all, or those unsure if their limited technical know-how will help them in a bind. With a managed VPS you get all the benefits of a VPS and all you really need to worry about is the web sites you host there.

Adding service, dropping service, functionality problems, and increased disk space are all just a service ticket away. All this, of course, comes at a price higher than say.

Unmanaged VPS

This is the low-cost option you don't really want to entertain unless you have the technical know-how, experience, and time to fuss with your own server.

Apart from server down-time which will be handled by your VPS provider, don't expect help with anything like troubleshooting, configuration, software issues, et al. if you choose this option. For those developing real-time systems and/or who have complete knowledge of UNIX as well as the time to configure, set up, and fix issues that may arise, an unmanaged VPS server is perhaps your best option and much less expensive to boot. It pays to have the know-how.

Unmanaged VPS hosting can come at a price as low as $8-15 per month but buyer beware! We found, and used for a time, a hosting company that charged us only $8 per month but soon found that it was so riddled with issues and downtime that we ultimately switched to a more reputable company. That is a story in and of its self that we'll perhaps share another time.

When deciding for yourself or your company whether to go with a managed or unmanaged VPS, keep in mind what we've mentioned above: unmanaged VPS if you're looking to save some money and have the technical know-how to handle all issues and configuration, managed VPS for convenience and expert help a few calls or clicks away. Typically, I recommend to people a managed VPS. Though the price may be a little higher, the benefit of letting someone else fuss over issues, performance, configuration, etc. is worth the added expense. If you're a wunderkind, whiz kid with UNIX, have the time, prefer to keep things in-house, or are developing live systems, I recommend saving yourself some cash and going unmanaged.
