Making Your Workspace ‘The Space’

by Richa Malhotra Real State

Our surroundings contribute a great deal in how we feel, how we act, and how we perform. The entire industry of home design is dedicated to turning our homes into places where we are comfortable, secure, and stimulated. There is an equally vocal industry that devotes itself to making office space interiors motivating, stress free, and invigorating. There are wonderful consultants who know how color and design affect us and how to design an office that stimulates productivity. But what about the small business or entrepreneur who is working from their basement or spare bedroom and doesn't even have an office per say. Though small and humble these are places where the stakes are just as high as a Fortune 500 boardroom and where people need to be as productive as the busiest advertising office on Madison Avenue. So, what do you do with the small but vital office?

Things like fixed walls, flooring, and overhead lighting may be already established and impractical to change. But there are things the small business can do to turn sometimes unfortunate places into places where the real work of business gets done. The first thing is to look for those things that you do have control over. The color of the walls, area rugs vs. carpets, decoration, and atmosphere are all things that can be altered. You must look at your commercial office space in Noida with a critical eye and think about cost-effective ways to modify the space to suit your needs.

Wall colors can be easily changed and should take into account the size of the office. Softer, neutral colors will make the space look larger and have stress reducing benefits. Go to the paint store and pick up a large selection of paint chips and share them with your employees. Tape them up on the walls and see how they make you feel. Choose a flat paint that minimizes glare and one durable enough to stand up to tape and post-its.

Floor coverings are more versatile than you think. An area rug can cover a bad carpet or a cold cement floor. Choose something with vivid colors and a pleasant pattern to offset the neutral walls. Avoid light colors that will show age and stains quickly. Good quality area rugs can be obtained from discount houses and close out centers. Most flooring stores carry a wide variety of area rugs and with the right sale it can be a real bargain. Just don't forget to purchase hard mats to put under desk chairs.

Another factor is indirect lighting. If your office space features overhead fluorescent lighting, invest in desk lamps for all work spaces. These do not need to be traditional gooseneck lamps but can be attractive table lamps. Again, your local discount store or even thrift store can offer really unique table and floor lamps at more than reasonable cost. Just be sure to equip them with multiple level bulbs for softer lighting and high intensity lighting. Better yet, same yourself future utility bills and go green-buy compact fluorescent bulbs for all your office lamps.

When you are a Fortune 500 company you can commission art work to fully express your vision and point of view. Until then, you have to be a little more creative. Hobby stores carry a wide selection of prints that you can put into poster frames to make them more professional. While lamps and rugs can be mismatched, you should try to organize art work around a theme. Advertising art, old movie posters, classic watercolors, or vivid modern art are all viable alternatives. Again, consult with your employees and co-workers. Make office decoration a group project with everyone having some input. You don't have to agree on every piece but you should agree on a consistent theme. Make sure you invest in attractive and high-quality frames and that they are hung properly. Less is usually more, but experiment with your layout until you find an arrangement that shows the flow of the office and dresses up dark corners.

As I said, you don't have to have a million-dollar budget to have a great office space. Find a space with reputed builder who understand your space and creative needs. They will create commercial office spaces that not only inspire you to excel in business and also demonstrates pride and excitement in where you are right now. There's always time for that Picasso down the road.
