Also known as dummy boards and bean bag toss, ‘Cornhole’ is a lawn game that is typically played in the summers. As the weather gets warmer, it is time to pull out your boards and bags and let the games begin!

However, if you have played cornhole before, you probably know that over the season, cornhole bags and accessories go through a lot of wear and tear.

If you have bags that look worn out or are working on a new cornhole set, sewing new bags is an easy DIY project.

If you are not familiar with the game, it is a lawn game where players throw small bags at a board with a hole in it. While there are various versions of score keeping, players typically score when the bags sink in the hole or land on the board.

A complete set of cornhole accessories include 8 bags, 4 each of two different colours. The bags are approximately 6”x 6” squares. Therefore, if you have 1 yard of fabric, you can expect to make up to 20 bags.

To make a set of the strongest cornhole bags, we recommend using Picasso 10 oz cotton duck material. Not only is it soft enough but can is convenient to sew and can withstand harsh beating that comes with tossing it around.

According to the American Cornhole Organization, the bags are supposed to be double stitched on the inner sides. Traditionally, the stuffing is feed corn but you can also use plastic pellets or beans. To make sure that your bags comply with the regulations, fill them up with 1-3/4 cup of corn to weigh almost 16 oz.

Here are a few simple steps you can use to make your very own cornhole bags:

  1. Cut out 8 square pieces from both the fabrics. The pieces should be 7” x 7”.
  2. Sew a stitch ½ inch in from the edge of 3 sides.
  3. Sew a second stitch next to the first, about ¼ inches from the edge.
  4. Now turn the bag with the right side out.
  5. Next, create a hem on the side that’s left open and sew ¾ of that end shut.
  6. Use a funnel to fill it with 1-3/4 of feed corn.
  7. Sew it shut!

There you go! Game on! We understand this can be a long and cumbersome process.
