Making Kids Digitally Resilient is the Need of the Hour

by Samiksha S. Author

Yes, we agree that our young generation knows way more about operating modern gadgets and using social media than what the previous generation does. However, they are at an age where they are still gaining experience and learning about the world at large. Thus, our children still need our guidance in differentiating the right from the wrong, even when it comes to the online space.

The online world comes with a multitude of risks. For instance, children might accidentally come across inappropriate content while internet surfing, such as violence or age-restricted videos. Moreover, kids might fail to differentiate between the real and virtual, thereby, becoming increasingly distant from the realities of life. Thus, creating digital awareness among the kids is an absolute necessity in the present times, and this makes digital resilience a must-have skill in the new generation kids.

The Various Ways to Build Digital Resilience in Children

As we have already established the need to create digital safety awareness in children, let us now outline what you can do to help the kids in this regard.

  • Learn all you can about the internet

One of the first advice we have for parents is to inform yourselves about all that is there to learn about the internet. Familiarize yourself with the social media platforms and the ways to use the online space. This will help you a lot in guiding your kids in the right direction.

  • Set standards for children’s online presence

After you are well-informed about the internet, you can set standards for what the children can and cannot do online. It will help them understand the online behavior that is expected from them. Besides, you can’t wait until something bad happens to start laying down the rules. So start now and help your kids stay aloof from the dangers of the online world.

  • Teach kids about the value of privacy

Hacking and malware invasion are common occurrences in the online world, and it is crucial that kids are made aware of it from an early age. Tell the kids explicitly about never sharing their personal information, such as addresses, phone numbers, or card details online without your permission.

  • Convey the message that they can approach you for anything

It is important for children to get the message from your end that they can approach you for anything that’s bothering them about their online presence. Be it the negative comments made by someone on their social media profiles or any act that they have done, let them know that you are always there to help them out.

At Sapphire International School, we firmly believe that keeping the children away from the digital space is not a viable solution in this hyper-connected modern world that we live in. The only thing, and probably the right thing that we can do to protect them is to help them understand the possible pitfalls of their internet use. Hence, step ahead and take charge to help them make better decisions in terms of their online activities.
