At the initial stage, it is very rarely detectable, but at the final stage it is converting a healthy person into diseased ones. With the advancement in technology, now every person is directly connected to mobiles, laptops, iPads, television, etc. which are seriously impairing our eyes at a greater level. So, here is the brief knowledge on the different types of eye disorders that are being caused by increased use of gadgets. Also, the natural ways to prevent them and maintain the health and beauty of eyes.
Importance of Eyes
Eye is an organ of sight situated in a quadrilateral bony cavity known as orbit. Maintaining a healthy condition of the eyes is very important because the eye gives vision to a person through which the person can see the surroundings and react according to it. Taking care of one’s eyes is important because if other senses stop working like smell, taste then eyes use to protect us from any endangerments. Good vision contributes towards a better quality of life. Studies show that the blue light emitted by the screens of mobile phones, laptops are responsible for damaging retinal cells.

Eye-Disorders Prevailing Due To Increased Use of Screen
Following are the diseases caused by excessive use of eyes in front of screen
- Xerosis of eye - The continuous opening of eye and less blinking rate causes tears to dry (commonest reason of Dry eye), lustreless condition of the cornea and sclera with symptoms of irritation of eye, burning sensation, discomfort of eye, etc. Ayurveda calls it ‘Sushka-akshipaka’ in which vision is blurred (when involved cornea) with severe pain while opening the eyes as mentioned in ‘Sushrut Samhita Uttara Tantra, 6/26’.
- Ocular pain- Painful throbbing headaches around the eye region due to continuous use of mobile phones. Ayurveda calls it ‘Anyatovata’ as mentioned in ‘Sushrut Samhita Uttara Tantra 6/27’ where the vitiated ‘Vata dosha’ situated in the orbital region is the cause of pain.
- Refractive errors- Issues like Myopia (Short sightedness), Hypermetropia (far-sightedness), Astigmatism, and Presbyopia. In all these, there is difficulty in focusing the light at the retina.
- Eye fatigue (Asthenopia)- A condition when eyes become tired of overuse and leads to ocular fatigue and tiredness.
- Age related macular degeneration - It generally affects people of the age group of 60years or more, but with the increased exposure to the blue light / radiations from the screen of gadgets, this condition starts sooner.
Management of Eye Problems with Ayurveda
Ayurveda has mentioned five types of managing procedures for Eye disorders which increases the power of eyes.
These are explained below
- Tarpan (Eye Rejuvenation) – It is done in an air free place. The medicated ghee is poured over the eyelids in an enclosure, to be built around the eyes with ‘Urad’ (Vigna moong)
- Putapaka- The eyes that have gone through the above ‘Tarpan’ procedure are only going for this to restore the strength of eyes that is exhausted in the ‘Tarpan’ procedure.
- Seka (Eye irrigation)- In this, eyes are kept closed and a fine stream of medicated liquid is poured over them.
- Aschyotana (Eye drops)- Pouring medicated drops in eyes.
- Anjana (Paste application)- A medicated paste is applied in the inner part of the eyes.
(All the above mentioned procedures come under the 'Kriyakalpa' in Ayurveda).
