Maharashtrian Wedding Guide: All You Need To Know

So, Maharashtrian weddings are one of the most subtle weddings one can come across. There are so many beautiful rituals surrounding Marathi weddings and today we will dig deep into them.

Pre–Wedding Rituals

Kelvan

Kelvan is performed a few days before the wedding. Both the families pray to Kuldevta and perform a Pooja for god’s blessings. This ceremony is followed by a meal together with close relatives.

Sankalp

Lajahoma

After Kanyadaan, the final Marathi rituals commence, a sacred fire is ignited and then the bride puts in grains to the fire chanting three mantras repeated by the groom. The 4th mantra is said in silence by the bride. After this, the bride's parents worship the couple as avatars of Vishnu and Laxmi and the couple tie a haldi ka dhaaga on each other’s hand. Lastly, the groom ties Mangalsutra around the bride's neck and puts vermillion on her forehead.

Karmsampati

This small ritual is a fun one where the couple and the parents pray to god for their well-being. Bride's brother twists the groom's ear to warn him to be careful with his sister. After this, a grand lunch awaits for the newlyweds.

Virat

Varat in a Maharashtrian wedding is the farewell of the bride from her home to the new family. While the bride says her goodbyes, the groom carries the Parvati idol from the Gaurihar Puja.

Grihpravesh

Prevalent in all weddings come the final ritual, Grihpravesh where the bride is welcomed to her in-laws. The mother of the groom performs Aarti and washes the couples’ feet with milk and water.

Reception

After all the wedding rituals are over, it is time for the final celebration party. At a reception party, the couple meets all their guests personally. The bride wears a saree that is gifted from her in-laws and vice versa for the groom.
