Famous for its diverse population and rich immigrant history the lower east side has survived time and tide to bring out history of various immigrant communities. Over the years the prosperous immigrant town has evolved but it has all through maintained its steady rich history. There several community landscapes in the neighborhood that mark the first steps most immigrants took while in their search of the american dream. Although many foreigners set their mark in this rich land the jewish history is what the jewish lower east side is famous for.

Religious sites

There several religious grounds significant to the jewish people history in the lower east side new york. They include:

Eldridge street synagogue

It is one of the first of the historical landmarks, now known as the eldridge street museum. It offers a firsthand portal into the past of the jewish peoples. The museum still operates as a synagogue and a number of jews can be seen walking in and out for their prayers. Tourists are welcomes to walk the corridors and snap pictures as well as get a general education into the rich jewish immigrant past that once walked the corridors of the synagogue.

Bialy stoker synagogue

This is an ancient historical sites built in 1826. The synagogue was inhabited by the methodist church and served as a stop for the underground railway for a long period of time before being sold to the polish jews. It has significant historical background including a ladder that leads to an attic where the ancient slaves hid on their way to canada. It also contains a three story arc transported from italy in the early 1900’s, it serves as a great historical site and has several sites that can be considered both a religious as well as a historical site.

The tenement museum

This is one of the biggest if not the best museum in the lower east side museums that has been in existence since 1863. The apartments within the temple are furnished to display the lives the former residents lead. The tourists have to go through a tiny narrow entrance to access the apartments on the upper floors of the museum. It shows various courses of life of different people creating a sight that is sure to melt your heart. There is a local gift shop where you can purchase gifts and tickets.

Jewish foods

Recovering from its bad reputation in the modern times, the lower east side has developed to host to some of the best jewish eateries in town.

There are some great restaurants including some historical jewish eats all through the area some of this include: katz’s delicatessen which is one of the oldest delis in new york, russ and daughters which was established in 1914 and streit’s mazto company the only matzo factory in the area.
