Coronary Artery endlessly supplies blood to heart muscle. An element called cholesterol from blood gets deposited on inner surface of coronary artery which creates a difficulty for pumping of heart. Along with cholesterol other minerals from blood also start to deposit in form of plaque. Due to this the internal surface of artery becomes harsh, which results in blood clots that ultimately reduce the area for blood to flow; at times it even creates a full blockage of artery. Term Angioplasty came from Latin word called "Angio" meaning vessel and "Plasty" meaning repair. Coronary Angioplasty as it is termed is an angioplasty performed on arteries supplying blood to heart and is a surgical procedure for patients who’s coronary artery disease cannot be treated with usual medicines. Patients suffering from chronic and regular chest pains even after taking medicines need to either go for angioplasty or a bypass surgery.

Why Is Angioplasty Performed?

Main purpose of angioplasty surgery is to widen narrowed arteries supplying blood to heart. This is done in order to ensure that enough blood and oxygen can be reached to the heart. Patient is not injected with anesthesia and is awake throughout this surgical procedure. An instrument called catheter is a narrow tube with a small balloon attached to its tip is inserted into a blood vessel near leg or arm. This catheter is then slowly passed through blood vessels until it reaches the point where coronary artery is narrowed. Once this balloon reaches the narrowed area of artery, it is inflated with air. Due to this pressure, the balloon flattens the plaque and helps in reopening of the artery. Balloon inflation time ranges from 30 seconds to several minutes, depending upon the artery blockage. Once the blockage is open, the balloon is deflated and pulled back through the blood vessel.

Role of Angioplasty Stent

Atypical stent is a small, mesh tube made of metal that expands inside coronary artery that helps in preventing the artery from closing up again soon after angioplasty surgery. It is planted soon after surgery and placed in the area of blockage. Implanting a stent inside the artery is a permanent procedure. It helps the patient in the following 2 ways.

  • First, immediately after angioplasty it prevents the narrowed artery from sudden closer or collapse of vessel.
  • Secondly, as many patients develop recurrence of blockages after angioplasty, therefore these stents generally reduce the risk of recurrence.

Types of Angioplasty Stents

2 types of angioplasty stents are available in India namely, Drug-Eluting and Metal Stent. Drug-Eluting Stents are coated with pharmacologic drug that helps reduce relocking and are better as compared with Metal Stent.

Following Angioplasty Surgery

  • The site where catheter was inserted is checked for bleeding and swelling. Also, the heart rate and blood pressure are monitored. Usually, patients are given medications to relax them so as to protect arteries against any kind of involuntary muscular contraction.
  • Patient is asked to lie down straight so as to make sure there is no discomfort or bleeding at the site of catheter insertion.
  • After few hours of observation in the cardiac care unit, patients are then shifted to other wards. Depending upon medical condition, he or she may get discharged from hospital the next day.
  • Treating doctor may prescribe aspirin or other medicine in order to prevent risk of blood clot in the artery. This also helps in reducing the risk of blood clots which are likely to get formed in and around stents.
  • After getting back home, please check the area where the catheter was inserted. It is expected to have some bruising and tenderness, but if there is any redness or swelling, or if the bruising gets worse, kindly contact the concerned doctor.
  • Patient is advised to avoid heavy weight lifting or vigorous activities for a few days after the procedure.

Aftercare for Angioplasty Patients

A healthy diet for your heart will always help in quicker recovery. It is necessary that you adhere to complete diet chart given by your doctor and follow it on a regular basis. It is also suggestive to go for regular health check-ups and visit your doctor in case of emergency.
