Serving apprenticeships is a thing of the past and used to be associated with shipbuilding, boiler making plumbing and carpentry.

No longer do any of these professions require the seven years of learning before a person is able to call him any of the above.

There is no more shipbuilding anyway as all the major yards of the North East, Glasgow and Belfast have long ago closed. Britain does still make high quality smaller boats in the luxury class and mainly for wealthy foreign buyers.

If apprenticeships of seven years were still common today it seems likely that anything to do with the design of websites and all the associated work that goes with promoting sites, might well have been one.

Seven years is a long time and only doctors have to study that much to qualify. On the other hand, apprenticeships were very good at keeping people employed and ensuring they were unlikely to push off half way through.

Apprentice shipbuilding in Britain used to be a tough business and maybe for this reason it has in the past produced some of the finest comedians in the land.

Arguably the two funniest current Scottish comedians today both cut their teeth keeping fellow workers amused on the banks of the Clyde shipbuilding yards.

Being a professional website designer is now a recognised profession and pays the way for millions around the world. Every business has a website right down to the local pub and even the window cleaner. The internet is the easiest and cheapest way of spreading the news about any profession or goods and with over half a billion registered websites and growing fast, the designer should never be short of work.

The World Wide Web is a product of the eighties and in a very short time it has dominated the world of communication. Communication is what advertising is all about and the importance of an excellent website should not be wasted on anyone with their own business.

A good website designer should ideally be able to explain to the customer all the ways the webpage can be further promoted. If the designer is not so strong in that department then he or she is likely to be working in an office with other people whose skills are in that area.

Ecommerce has arrived and developed all within twenty years or so and at such a rate that it would take a genius to have a clear idea of what the world will look like in just twenty or even ten years.

One thing that is evident is the problems retail shops will have just to survive the growing practice of online buying. With some manufacturers using their website to offer direct sales the retail market is shrinking as the middle man is cut out of the picture.

Nobody can have a clear idea how things will be in ten years but it certainly looks healthy as far as we can see into the future for any professional in the art of promoting via the internet.
