Looking for used cars? Here’s 3 things you should do once you find one!

by Kevin Smith Author

The pre-owned vehicle market in Australia is quite vast, and there really are some great rides just waiting on dealer lots for the right buyer to come along and take a test drive. Of course, it’s much more complicated than that for most shoppers. There’s brand and model to select, followed by an honest evaluation of one’s personal finances and the application to automotive lending firms for a loan that’s just right for the individual. After all of that, the task at hand is to actually find the vehicle you want at the price of the loan approval. When someone asks if you are simply “Looking for used cars?” they probably don’t understand the complexity of the process. With all of the previous steps accomplished, congratulations are in order! Now that you’ve got your new to you ride, here are three things you need to do if you want to make sure that is stays in great shape for all of the adventures to come. Let’s start with:

#1 — Service your vehicle at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals!

Your pre-owned vehicle is counting on you to do the right thing when it comes to service, especially if the previous owner didn’t! The manufacturers of today’s automobiles spend millions of dollars designing and torture testing their products in order to fully prove their worth. This means that no matter what you may have heard from a “car guy,” read on the internet, or have a “gut” feeling about, there’s simply no better expert on when and what type of service your vehicle needs than the manufacturer’s owner manual.

#2 — Insist on high quality drivetrain fluids and original equipment specification parts!

When used cars are taken in on trade or purchased from an auction house, the best pre-owned dealerships make sure to inspect, properly repair, and clean them fully before placing them on the lot for purchase. But what if your ride came from one of the cheap used car dealers instead? Make sure to insist on high quality engine oil and transmission fluid when you vehicle reaches its first service window under your ownership. And should it be found that your ride needs some repairs during the first service, make sure that the mechanic uses parts that meet the original factory specifications when doing the work.

#3 — Obtain an extended warranty and a roadside assistance contract!

Even with regular maintenance and the best in fluids and parts, vehicles can still break down. That’s why our third and final point stresses the importance of purchasing an extended warranty and signing up for a roadside assistance service. While these may seem like unnecessary expenses to many, both items will most assuredly pay for themselves in the event of major repairs or a stranding far from civilization.

Most people think that all of the work in acquiring a pre-owned vehicle happens before the sale, but now you know the truth of the matter. Enjoy your new ride, and follow these three proven steps to ensure that all of the kilometres ahead of you are happy ones!
