The amalgamation of the Municipal Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham gave rise to one borough. Hammersmith had its origin from ‘Hammoder’s Hythe’. This was a refuge which belonged to a guy with the name ‘Hammoder’. Other people have stated that it is the combination of ‘hammer’ and ‘smithy’ which is considered to be a place for metal working. Fulham belongs to the Anglo- Saxon name ‘Fulla’ and ‘hamm’ which mean a bend in the river.
