Thimphu (The Capital)

Thimphu, permanent capital of Bhutan since 1960, lies in a broad west-central river valley at an altitude of around 8,100 feet. The town, with around 20,000 inhabitants, is dominated by the newly rebuilt Tashichhodzong a beautiful fortress like monastery constructed on ancient traditional lines without the use of plans or nails. The dzong, which repla-ced an earlier one built by the country's first Shabdrung, Nga-wang Namgyal, in 1641 (the cen-tral "Uchi" portion is part of the original structure) not only hou-ses the national secretariat but is the headquarters of the monk body as well.

It also contains a chamber for the National Assembly and apartments for the King and distinguished visitors. Women are forbidden to remain inside the dzongs after 6 p. m. The "Uchi" contains a succession of temples, one above the other. In the monastery, rows of monks recite ancient Buddhist scriptures, often in gold print, on to oblong strips of paper which are bound between wooden boards.

All the people, whether government officials or common people, wear the national dress—KOH (for men: a long robe tied at the waist and pouched over the belt to form a pocket). On ceremonial occasions a sword is worn by all senior officials. Women, who enjoy equal rights with men and play an active part in national affairs, wear an ankle-length robe called KIRA. The Kira is tied at the waist with a wide sash and fastened at the shoulders with silver brooches The Royal Cottage, residence of the King, is across the river from the dzong.
