Life of a third culture kid
Have you seen your friends moving to different cities while you remained in the same place, attending same school for years, as a kid? Then you have probably came across a third culture kid. These kids spend most of their growing years in different places other than their birthplace. Parents who have a transferable job usually have to move to different cities for job and due to that their whole family needs to relocate to new places frequently. The third culture kids usually stay in the place of their birth for a very short span of time and in many cases these kids have very vague idea about their birthplace or the lifestyle, customs and traditions followed there.
One of the positive aspect of third culture kids is that they get exposed to various cultures and lifestyle and hence they naturally have great adaptability power and can embrace intercultural relationships easily. They learn different languages and get accustomed to the cultural preferences. Third culture kids have a much developed view of the world and they can see beyond the differences that exist among different nations.
Along with this, a third culture kid
also have to face many challenges, they usually have a confused view about
patriotism since their sentiments were never really rooted to their motherland.
Apart from this, they get confused with politics and laws since the political
system and law changes from nation to nation and these changes can be
drastically different and difficult to understand. Third culture kids are
always not much aware about their own culture, religion and other practices so
if they ever get to go to their homeland to stay, they won’t be able to mix
instantly and will take time in the same way as they did while moving to a new
location. Young kids who falls in this
category might find it difficult to adjust at first but eventually they learn
how to adjust and enjoy at new places.Third culture kids are unique and they go
through an adventurous experience for years.
