Straddling both Europe and Asia, Istanbul is undeniably a one-of-a-kind destination. With a history dating back to the 13th century BC and a way of life that gives a glimpse in to several different cultures of the world, the Turkish city mesmerizes one and all with its unparalleled charm. If you are planning on hopping on a cheap flight to Istanbul any time soon, then brace yourself because the city will take you on a thrilling ride.

While most vacationers spending time in Istanbul return home after exploring just the well-known points of interest in the city, you must dare to go off the beaten path. There is a plethora of attractions that — though lesser known — are still as fascinating as the famed ones in the city. Here is a list of some forgotten tourist hotspots that you do not want to miss if you have made a flight reservation to Istanbul.

Chora Church

Chora Church gives an amazing insight in to the Byzantine style of architecture which looks absolutely splendid. This mosaic and fresco laden church was originally named as the “Church of the Holy Savior Outside the Walls” to denote the fact that when it was built it was situated outside the city walls. What a visitor sees today is not the original church because it has been reconstructed almost five times till date. Nonetheless, the beauty of the church stands undisputed.

Church of St. George

Church of St. George or St. George’s Cathedral could easily be one of the most underrated points of interest in the entire city of Istanbul. It is a Greek Orthodox cathedral which has been serving as the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church’s senior patriarchate since the 17th century. But the history of the place is not the only thing that makes it worth a visit. In a city that is swamped by Byzantine buildings, this place is actually built as per the Neoclassical Style. So, if the city’s architectural marvels persuaded you to book a flight ticket to Istanbul, then you would love to visit the Church of St. George.

Gülhane Park

The dazzling cultural and historical charm of Istanbul can often leave you blinded to the natural abundance that the city is home to. And, one such place that goes unnoticed is the Gülhane Park; a splendid natural site in the area. With its name translating to “House of Roses,” Gülhane Park is the oldest and one of the largest urban parks in the city. It served as an imperial park till 1912, at which point it was opened to public. And ever since, it has been a hotspot for people who wish to escape the hustle and bustle, and spend time amidst tranquility.

Istanbul Modern Art Museum

Strolling in the streets of a city that is famed all over the world for its monuments, making your way to a museum isn’t a thought that would easily cross your mind. However, if an out-of-the-box experience is what you seek, then you need to visit Istanbul Modern Art Museum. It is the first museum of modern and contemporary art in Turkey. It collects, preserves and displays art pieces from all over the world.

So, these are among the most underrated points of interest in Istanbul. If you haven’t booked tickets yet and are looking for a destination to go on a vacation, then ditch flight tickets to Seoul, Taipei, Singapore or any other Asian city and head to Istanbul for an unforgettable time with friends and family.
