Men often need space when they start getting close to a woman. Sometimes it's because they need to process this as it can be overwhelming for them. Remember they are not emotional gurus like us women are. Men sometimes need space to figure out what they see you as - fun or relationship material. So if a guy is hot and cold - this is most probably where he is at.
