Large Family Living Room: Furniture Considerations

by Emma L. Business consultant

The living room is the place in any home where, aside from the kitchen, the entire family gets together to enjoy some quality bonding time. This is also the room where you welcome all of your guests whenever you organize a get-together. That’s why the majority of people pay a lot of attention when decorating this area of the home, trying to make it as stylish and as unique as possible.

Now, if you have a large family, chances are that you’re already living in a pretty roomy home and that your living room is probably a bit more spacious. If that’s the case, you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed with the idea of redecorating such a space, but there really is no reason. Here, we’ll explore some considerations when furniture pieces and placement is concerned. Check it out.

Come up with the optimal layout

Before you actually go and buy furniture for your new living room, you should first consider your current layout. Determine whether the current position of all the furniture pieces is the best one and see how it can be improved. Besides, your current furniture pieces will make it easier for you to determine which furniture pieces you need or want to replace or relocate, which will make shopping for new pieces that much easier.

Determine the function of the room

Next, you should consider the function of the room. Yes, of course, the living room usually serves for entertainment, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have some extra functions as well. For instance, you can choose to use your living room as a home office as well, or if you have small children, this can be your “daycare playroom”. For instance, you can designate the spot in your living room and put a big kid’s inflatable pool there, fill it with soft blankets, pillows and your child’s favorite toys and create a perfect little playing nook for them where they can enjoy themselves while you sit down to do some light reading or watch your favorite TV show.

Determine the focal point

Furthermore, finding or creating the focal point in your living room will make the rest of designing and decorating much easier. For instance, if you have a beautiful fireplace, you can use it as the focal point of your room and base the rest of the room design around it. Alternatively, you can create a statement wall with some bold shade or an interesting wallpaper and let it serve the function of the focal point in your living room.

Boost the design with a statement piece

Usually, when talking about décor statement pieces, people generally go for a large framed mirror or an elaborate chandelier. However, you can choose to go with a beautiful statement rug or a unique and functional piece of furniture, such as these pieces form King Living’s current collections, and give a new twist to this all-time favorite. For instance, an oversized modular sofa that can welcome your entire family at once is definitely a piece of furniture that is useful, practical and attention-grabbing.

Make it cozy

Yes, the living room should be stylish and spacious and functional, but it should also be cozy above all else. So, in order to achieve this, try moving your furniture away from walls and grouping it together to create a visually cozy seating area that promotes conversation and interaction. This way, your living room will look well-organized, inviting and pulled together. To deepen the coziness even further, get a big fluffy area rug and make it work as a base of your seating furniture arrangement.

Top everything off with stunning wall art

Meticulously picked and placed wall art pieces are the easiest way to instantly lift the design of any room. Therefore, once you are happy with your focal point and carefully place all the furniture pieces in their rightful place, go searching for some art pieces that will fit in well with the rest of the room. Alternatively, you can even make them yourself and turn this into a fun little family project.

Top it all off with a good lighting design

Layering lighting solutions throughout your living room is another thing you absolutely need to take care of. First of all, in the initial phase of making the optimum room layout, you should plan where all the lighting fixtures will go in the future so that you have a general idea where to install the outlets. Three layers of lighting you should aim at including in your living room design include ambient, task and decorative lighting. The ambient lighting is, of course, the general overhead lighting that has the power to illuminate the entire room. On the other hand, task and decorative lighting serve the purpose of providing enough light for doing a certain task – such as reading – or enhancing the decorative pieces of the room design.

The next time you decide to redecorate your living room, keep all the members of your family in mind so that you come up with a design that is not only stunning but the one that suits everyone’s needs.
