Laredo: One of Your Most Interesting Stops
Laredo is the county seat of Webb County, Texas and is located on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas. It’s one of the oldest crossing points along the Mexican-United States border and the nation’s largest inland port of entry, with roots tracing back to 1755, when it was founded by a Spanish captain and settled into by three families.
In 1840, Laredo was the capital of the independent Republic of the Rio Grande, set up in opposition to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; it was eventually brought into Mexico by military force. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the town was occupied by the Texas Rangers. After the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo ceded the land to the United States.
An interesting place to visit whilst there is the Republic of the Rio Grande Capitol Building Museum. It is located in the downtown historical district. What was once the Capitol building now showcases memorabilia from the short- lived Republic of the Rio Grande. It contains pictures, books and furniture from the 19th century Laredo area.

Most of Laredo’s architecture is of Spanish Colonial, American, and Mexican flavour. Narrow streets that are lined with stucco-walled storefronts lead to a vast plaza that is enclosed by red-brick roads and colourful arcade-style buildings. Towering above all this is the stunning Gothic Revival-style cathedral with a five-story tall bell and clock tower.
For a more in-depth look at Laredo’s history, culture and people, it’s a good idea to take time to visit the Border Heritage Museum, which is located in a restored early 20th century home.
The city is also one of the best birding destinations in South Texas. In its peak season, more than 240 species of native and migratory birds can be seen. There is also a thriving arts movement, with art galleries full of vibrant paintings and expertly-crafted pottery.
Speaking of pottery, Laredo is also wonderful for shopping. San Bernardo Avenue has more than 40 blocks of imported Mexican pottery, clothing and jewellery from all over Mexico; there are several large malls in the city as well.
