Krampusnacht Sparks Interest In “Contemporary Krampus”
The upcoming Austrian holiday helps create interest for historical figure Krampus along with merchandise and films featuring the devilish creature.
New York- Suddenly, Author of the best selling art book CONTEMPORARY KRAMPUS is deluged with phone calls and emails. “Krampusnacht, or Krampus Night, is really creating interest in Krampus this year. Besides my book Contemporary Krampus, there is a new big budget film called Krampus from Universal opening this weekend, there are magnificently crafted Krampus sweaters from Middle Of Beyond, a great new Krampus plush toy from Warpo on Kickstarter , a beer, and so much more!” says Mike Drake from his New York office.
Krampusnacht parades or marches, where people dress as Krampus and walk through a town to gather up the “naughty” are gaining in popularity. Detroit’s Krampus march is now in it’s fifth year.
“As little as seven years ago, few people in the US knew about Krampus” says Drake, “Now, after appearances on The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show, Scooby-Doo, American Dad, The League, Grimm, and many other popular shows, Americans are embracing Krampus. But, considering Krampus pre-dates the 17th Century, we are a little late to the party”.
Drake’s book, Contemporary Krampus, gathers 70 diverse artists from around the globe to create new images of Krampus. From renowned artists like Angus Oblong to up and comers like Peter Skullkid, each image has been hand selected by curator of curiosities and Krampus scholar Mike Drake.
The book, along with other Krampus related merchandise, has surged in popularity in the past week, as the Krampusnacht holiday drawn near and Universal prepares to release their Krampus film starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, David Koechner, and others.
“In the end, it all comes down to this” says Drake, “During my Contemporary Krampus book signing at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Times Square Odditorium, a little girl asked me if Krampus was real, I told her if Santa is real than Krampus is too. Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian and grew up believing in Krampus, and I’m certainly not going to tell him he was wrong”.
Krampus opens in theatres December 4th, Contemporary Krampus is available in local book stores and on Amazon now.
