Over the years, the scope for fashion design in India has gone up with leaps and bounds. The advantages of nurturing your clothes designing skills here are that there is tremendous diversity in dresses worn across the country due to a multitude of cultures. This offers tremendous scope for originality and creativity to a budding fashion designer in India.

Apart from the creativity, this business is also tremendously lucrative and offers a generous dose of glamor and high life. It is certainly an exciting career option for creative individuals, with the large number of well known fashion designers today. So much so that even director Madhur Bhandarkar had made a film titled Fashion which talks about the ups and downs of a model in the competitive modelling business. The behavior of models, designers and media persons was perfectly captured in this Bollywood flick.

Talking about the top fashion designers in Delhi, there are some like Pernia Quereshi who immediately come to mind. A trained Kuchipudi dancer, she was responsible for the chic look given to Sonam Kapoor in the movie Aisha, much appreciated by the cinematic audiences. This young designer started her career as a stylist and costume designer in New York, which soon led to her own online fashion store called Pernia Pop-Up. It has designs made by famous fashion designers in Delhi such as Sabsachi Mukherjee, Rohit Bal, JJ Vallaya, Rina Dhaka and others, but collections are all hand-picked by her. Others who have made a mark in the Delhi circuit are Mira Gulati, Payal Jain and Vineet Bahl. Of course, fashion studios by designers such as Neeta Lulla, Rohit Bal, Rina Dhaka, Ritu Kumar and other well known names are present in Delhi.

Among fashion designers in Mumbai, Tarun Tahiliani is a popular name, famous for his ability to infuse Indian craftsmanship and textiles with European tailored silhouette. Several interior design projects for hotels and restaurants have been taken up by him in the past. On his website, it is possible to take a look at his current season collections as well as bridal and interior ones. Famous works by him are Rubaiyat and Kumbhback, which has been inspired by the Maha Kumbh Mela.

The best known among fashion designers in Bangalore has to be Manoviraj Khosla. His studios have exclusive collections of formal wear, casual wear, party wear and of course, wedding trousseau. The line of sporty clothing under the label of Kingfisher has also been designed by him. He is probably one of the few designers who also create a collection of foot wear. Other than him, names such as Deepika Govind, Neetu Gupta and Kajal Nachiah are also popular in India’s garden city.

Undoubtedly, the fashion world has tremendous scope for work, but then it is also immensely competitive. Designers often have tight deadlines to contend with, apart from competition among them. One can say that to succeed as a designer world, it requires a delicate mix of fashion knowledge and managerial skills.
