Know What Accessories will Work for Your Truck

by Ella Wilson Love to write
Lots of owner/operators get the urge to invest in custom truck chrome accessories for your rig. All across the country at local events and even at trade shows, custom rigs draw huge crowds. There are magazines, gatherings, and even online forms devoted to customizing big rigs with elaborate paint jobs, shining chrome, and lavish interiors. Trucking is more than a much more than job, it’s a lifestyle.

Getting started with customizing your rig is as easy as starting with a few accessories that give more bang for the buck. Customize your rig and make a big statement about your OTR lifestyle. Take these tips to make your rig shine.

  1. Full custom parts are very expensive. Full custom chrome accessories are not available off the shelf, they have to be specifically made to order for your truck’s make, model, and year.

  2. For a custom look without the custom sticker shock, purchasing off-the-shelf aftermarket parts is a good way to go. Chrome accessories vary from simple license plate holders, axle covers, and interior trim to grill guards, exhaust stacks, and winterfronts.

  3. New, used, or renewed? New parts can be expensive, but customizers like to frequently change the look of their rigs by changing out parts. The price tag for new can be considerable, however used parts are available as our remanufactured and reconditioned from parts and accessories.

  4. When buying used parts, be aware of a few things. These parts are generally not under warranty, they may be from salvage situations, and you may not be able to get a refund if you’re not satisfied. While these parts might be in less than perfect condition, with time and attention to detail, even old chrome can be cleaned up or be replated to look like new.

  5. Remanufactured or reconditioned parts have generally been re-machined to factory specifications. They may come with a shorter warranty than a new part but can be expected to perform well.

  6. Get ready to do some upkeep. All that chrome doesn’t clean itself. The key to keeping chrome in good condition is a four-step process. Clean, dry, wax, buff. Clean your chrome with a gentle cleanser, such as Dawn dish detergent, then rinse and dry. Once the chrome is dry, put on a layer of wax, and then buff to a shine. It doesn’t need to be fancy, plain old Turtle Wax works just fine. The object is to seal the chrome behind the wax from damage by road conditions.

There are a lot of specialty brands out there when it comes to caring for chrome. However, they can be expensive and may not work as well as cheaper alternatives. Keep your cleaning and sealing kit handy to keep that chrome looking shiny and new.

Work with reputable dealers in chrome accessories and truck parts for the best fit, selection, and service. Remember, never try to fit truck chrome accessories for one make of truck on to another. There is no one-size-fits-all in truck chrome accessories. Stick with the parts made specifically for your make, model, and year.
