The outer bark of the trees is first scraped out using a sharp tool. And then, the inner bark is hammered in order to loosen down from the branch and a long strip is removed when it is still wet. It is then allowed to dry which after drying naturally gets curl into yard-long quills. The quills are then cut into 2-4 inches length.
