Know about the Four Major Types of Uterine Fibroids

by Michael Griffin Michael
Have you been lately diagnosed with uterine fibroids? If yes, make sure not to stress out as almost all women, who have attained their reproductive age suffer from this medical condition at some point in their lives. Non-cancerous tumors of varying size and numbers develop in and around the female reproductive system causing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain, frequent urination, constipation, backaches, pelvic pressure, discomforting sexual intercourse, and complications in pregnancy.

In the following write-up, I have jotted down four different types of uterine fibroids. Readers are requested to buy some time and take a close look at the below-mentioned pointers.

1. Intramural

Also known as leiomyomas and myomas, intramural fibroids grow inside the walls of the uterus and keep expanding with time. Starting from hormonal imbalance to adverse lifestyle changes and genetics-there are varied reasons compelling these lumps to occur and develop.

2. Subserosal

According to top-notch professionals carrying out uterine fibroids treatment with utmost precision, the subserosal fibroid is perhaps the most common type. Here the tumors emerge on the outer lining of the uterus and tend to protrude in the external direction. They grow quite quickly disrupting the entire shape of the uterine cavity, causing excruciating pain, as well as putting intense pressure on all nearby organs.

3. Submucosal

Submucosal fibroids grow beneath the uterine lining and tend to crowd the entire womb causing abnormally long periods and other severe problems. Even though there is no definite cause behind the appearance of the said lumps, medical professionals suggest that an increase in levels of estrogen and progesterone can trigger their growth. Submucosal fibroids block fallopian tube and do not allow sperms to reach egg making conception almost impossible.

4. Pedunculated

Pedunculated fibroids are attached to the walls of the female reproductive system by a stalk-like structure. In case the stalk twists, patients would feel an intensely sharp pain in their lower abdomen. These growths tend to appear both in and out the uterus.

All the fibroid types stated above could be easily treated through hysterectomy or myomectomy but considering the risks associated, healthcare specialists moved on to look for alternatives. After much research and experimentation, Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) was innovated. This minimally invasive process can shrink many tumors simultaneously and offer relief from the painful symptoms almost immediately.

No scars and side-effects along with preservation of uterus are some other benefits to look out for. An increasing number of women from all across the globe are lately opting for UFE because it takes only about 30 minutes and they are expected to recover and resume their normal lifestyle within a week or so.
