Know about the different types of contact lenses available in the market today
by Rhonda R. Eckert Halloween and Colored Contact LensesContact lenses are used for
vision correction as well as for the cosmetic purposes and are placed on the
cornea of the eyes. Earlier the contact lenses were made of glass and were
sclera lenses. Sclera lenses are basically large in diameter and cover the
complete sclera, the white portion of the eyes. Because of the size, shape and
material used, these lenses could only be worn for shorter period of time. But
now with advancements in technology, the lenses are made of soft materials that
make them comfortable to wear for even longer durations.
There are numerous benefits of
using contact lenses. If they are used for vision correction purposes, they
perform the same functions as the conventional glasses. But as opposed to the
glasses, contact lenses are almost weightless and invisible. Most importantly,
they are more comfortable than the traditional spectacles.
In market, there are different
types of lenses available for both vision disabilities and cosmetic purposes.
Some of these are mentioned below:
Soft lenses
1.
Disposable
lenses
If you are concerned about the
hassles of regular care and maintenance of the contact lenses, then disposable
contact lenses are the one for you. They are the use and throw contact lenses
and come in daily disposable or weekly disposable schedule. Daily disposable
contact lenses even do not require to be cleaned with the cleaning solutions.
These are available in different color options too and if someone wants to try
different eye colors, these lenses can perfectly serve the purpose.
2.
Annual
soft contact lenses
As the name suggests, these
lenses can be used up to one year. These lenses are made of soft materials
allowing the oxygen to pass through the eyes completely which prevents the eyes
from drying out. Unlike other disposable contact lenses, these require regular
cleaning and proper storage. With proper care, they can be worn for a stretch
of 14 hours.
Rigid gas permeable contact lenses
These contact lenses allow more
oxygen to pass through them in comparison to soft contact lenses. These lenses
are highly beneficial in terms of durability and clarity of vision. The wearer
can take some time in getting used to them as they are made up of semi-rigid
material.
Extended wear contact lenses
These contact lenses are designed
in a way to be worn for longer duration without the need to take them out at
all even while sleeping. They come in different categories such as they could
be either worn for a period of 7 days or up to 30 days continuously. They allow
oxygen to pass easily through the eyes, keeping them comfortable in the eyes
for multiple days.
Cosmetic lenses
The cosmetic lenses are used when the wearer wants some change in their eyes’ color. Colored contact lenses come in four varieties such as visibility tints, enhancement tints, opaque tints and light filtering tints. They come with or without power correction. There are other special-effect contact lenses also that have unique designs and color imprinted on them. The cleaning and maintenance of these lenses are similar to any other conventional contact lenses.
