Kenya All Relevant Import and Export Statistics that you must Know

Kenya is the 96th largest goods trading partner with $1.1 billion in total goods trade during 2019. As per Kenya Import Data, the import value of the goods increased from approximately 15.3 billion KSh in July. The country mainly imports maize, un-milled wheat and wheat flour, rice and sugar.

The main import partners are China, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Japan. As per the Kenya Shipment Data, Kenya is one of the fastest growing markets in Africa and is set to increase annual imports of oil products to around 6 million tons. Diesel imports account for 55 to 66% of imports and gasoline around 35%. The closure of the refinery points to the growing gap between local supply and the region’s rising demand.

The country imports Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers from India, which valued US$305.16 thousand during 2020. The country imported $2.13B in refined petroleum becoming the 48th largest importer of refined petroleum in the world.

As per Kenya Export Data, exports of the country expanded 15.4% year on year in the year 2021. The major exports of Kenya are tea, coffee, cut flowers and vegetables. The country is the world’s leading exporter of black tea and cut flowers.

The major exporting partners of Kenya are Uganda, United States, Netherlands, Pakistan and United Kingdom. As per Kenya Custom Data, the country is the 4th largest producer of mangoes in Africa, with a 1.8% global production share of 0.9 million tonnes. Mango is the second highest exported fruit in Kenya contributing to 10.8% of total fruit export with a value of KSh 1.4 billion.

Mangoes from Kenya reported 30% jump in exports, largely attributed to their intense continuous training that guides farmers to plant and maintain mangoes professionally in order to meet stringent quality standards at the destination markets.

The main varieties of mango grown in Kenya are Apple and Ngowe accounting for 39% and 17% respectively. The country is gearing to resume its multi – billion mango export business. The country is among the top exporters of fresh produce to the world market with Europe taking the major share of the total export.

The European market is a great boost to Kenya mango dealers given the earnings from Europe are 20% more than what they get from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other middle east countries. Flowers are also the major exports of Kenya where country supplies over 60% of roses to the European market.
