Keeping Your Kids Educated during the COVID-19 Pandemic

by Kristen White Blogger

Brick and mortar schools have done a great job of preparing to accept kids back to school by implementing new cleaning measures, creating smaller class sizes and even developing a hybrid approach where kids alternate between virtual and in-class attendance. However, even with these measures, many families are more comfortable with keeping their kids at home on a full-time basis which means that homeschooling has grown exponentially over the past year. While there are many options to choose from, it’s necessary to consider at least three important factors to find best online Christian schools.

The first consideration is determining the format that works best for the family’s schedule and personal situation. Parents of younger children will need to be more hands-on, while older students can be more independent and work virtually with ease. When looking for the right homeschool program, find one that offers a 3-12th grade online curriculum and a print option as well for younger elementary students.. This ensures that students can stay enrolled in the same program from grade to grade even if the family isn’t sure whether this will be a short or long-term option. The top sites should include lesson planners and teacher guides to help parents with the lessons and offer a brief overview of the curriculum as well as a way to look at a demo.

The next consideration when looking for online Christian school is accreditation, hopefully with several different accrediting bodies. Accreditation is a rigorous process that looks at every aspect of the homeschool program including the teachers, curriculum, administration process, and every factor to ensure that it meets recognized professional educational standards. The benefit of enrolling in an accredited homeschool program is that report cards and transcripts are accepted by public institutions such as high schools and colleges/universities. This makes it easier for students to transition back into traditional school if they want or to get admitted into the college or university of their choice after graduation. Lastly, parents should talk with the admissions counselor to review the various options available to the family and students. These include standard vs honors classes, flex schedules for high schoolers, part or full-time teaching assistance from staff members and tuition costs and available discounts.  With many  new families moving to homeschooling, the more help they can get from an established program, the easier the transition to this new format will be for everyone involved.

Moving to a homeschool education can be challenging so it’s important to find an online community and local support group for parents and kids. While many students enjoy the benefits of this non-traditional approach to education, it is different from what they are used to and even with COVID-19 as a good reason to make the switch, it is helpful to safely talk with others who have gone through this experience. Take time to find the right online Christian homeschool program to ensure your child gets the best education at home they can and have peace of mind that you are keeping them safe and healthy at the same time.
