Keeping Private Information Private
by Mike Jones BloggerOne of
the fastest growing crimes across North America is identity theft. In fact,
according to the Privacy Rights Clearing House there are over 20,000 reported
cases of identity theft each day! That equals roughly ten million per year and is
rapidly rising. If ever there were a time for companies, small businesses and
even individuals to consider the enlisting of shredding services or investing
in a mobile shredder to destroy sensitive documents and papers, it is now.
Thieves sift through the garbage outside businesses and homes in search of
their treasure, which is usually credit card receipts, tax documents, employee
applications or even insurance forms in hopes of finding anything with a
person’s Social Security number, driver’s license number or possibly a bank
account or routing number. Once this type information has been compromised,
turmoil and financial destruction is sure to follow.
By not hiring reputable shredding services, companies are leaving themselves’
and their clients or customers at potential risk for having their financial
lives turned upside down. The potential of identity theft does not stop merely
at finances either. Once thieves have critical information in their hands they
can have their own identification printed in the victim’s name. This can create
legal issues that most never consider by not utilizing shredding services or
mobile shredders. Thieves or cyber criminals can take out loans and apply for
credit cards but can also take it one step farther. They might open a checking
account and write worthless checks then skip out of town leaving the local
police or sheriff’s deputies with warrants in the victim’s name. Imagine being
pulled over one day and suddenly handcuffed for warrants in your name issued by
a county you never lived in! Or perhaps being sued over an accident you were
never involved in.
Mobile shredders and services that provide document shredding is essential in
this day and age where there are actually people out there trying to steal
vital information from you or a company that you do business with. Tax
documents, insurance forms, resumes and virtually anything that may have your
name, address, identification numbers or banking information must be properly
disposed of as quickly as possible to avoid falling into the wrong
hands.Unfortunately, most victims have no clue when or how their information
was stolen. Worse yet, once they have become a victim to identity theft, it
will take years for them to recover from the destruction left behind.
Businesses could be bankrupt in a matter of a few hours if crucial documents
were to be stolen by thieves.
