Just Getting Dental Implants is Not Enough

by Krishan Kumar SEO Expert & Content Marketer
There are over 120 million individuals in America with a missing tooth. Dental implants are considered to be one of the most reliable solutions for missing teeth.

dental implant may not be a living tooth but you still need to take proper care of it. The best part is, you don’t have to go out of the way to take care of dental implants. You would take the same measures as with your actual teeth. You do, however, need to take some specific measures immediately after the implants are put in to ensure there are no complications.

After getting the implant, you need to be vigilant for 48 hours to ensure that there are no issues after the surgery. This is usually when you can tell if the surgery went well. Your dentist will ask you to apply gentle pressure and be sure to do so for at least an hour after the surgery with gauze. Unless there is excessive blood, don’t replace the gauze for the first hour. After this, you should change the gauze every 30 minutes.

There will be some discomfort and you will experience swelling, pain, and oozing. It is normal to experience these symptoms since the body is healing itself. To let the mouth heal, you need to take the following measures:

  • Ensure that the surgical area isn’t disturbed.
  • Use a gentle toothbrush to brush your teeth at night.
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water three times a day.
  •  Apply ice to the area if needed.
  • Rest.

After the first 2 days, you can go about caring for your mouth as you normally would. It is normal for the gums around the surgical area to have bruising and discoloration for a few days. However, if it continues and you notice any type of sharp protrusion then you should contact your dentist.

Tips to ensure the longevity of dental implants

You need to take proper care of the dental implants so that it remains intact and is well-maintained. You need to go about your daily oral regimen which should include:

  • Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush.
  •  Flossing daily.
  • Rinsing your mouth with salt water, you want to continue to do this until your implants are completely healed.
  • Visiting your dentist regularly.

Besides these, you also want to keep a check on your diet. You should consider limiting acidic and sugary food and drinks as they are harmful to your teeth. As well as consume softer food that is nutrient-rich.

While the surgery may be successful and you feel that there is no point to visit your dentist again, be sure to schedule post-operative appointments. Your dentist will inspect and make sure that the implant and teeth are clean and healthy.

There is a misconception that dental implants don’t need to be taken care of since they are no actual living teeth. However, to ensure longevity you need to take care of them as you would the rest of your teeth. Along with a good oral regimen, you need to work on your diet and continue to see your dentist. We can’t emphasize the importance of regular dental checkups as your dentist can help ensure good overall oral health. Through examination, they can detect oral problems before they become an issue and help you take preventative measures.
