Job description of a bodyguard

by Executive Protection Institute EPI was founded in 1978

The lifestyle of a professional bodyguard is not as glamorous as it is often portrayed in television series and films.

An executive protection agent often does more work behind the scenes. They are generally highly disciplined and trained, primarily if they work for an elite agency.

Most bodyguards come with specialized law enforcement or military backgrounds. However, if this is not the case with you, you can always join an executive protection training course to accrue all the required skills. Let's take a look at a few typical roles and responsibilities of a professional bodyguard.

Roles and responsibilities of a bodyguard

As a bodyguard, your roles and responsibilities tend to be very broad and often vary depending on your client and position.

You may work as a driver-bodyguard for a client who does not want an entire team. In this case, your primary responsibilities would be an escort, transportation, and maybe even counter-surveillance.

If you are working with a close protection team with a high-profile client, then your roles and responsibilities will be much more specific to your position on the team.

Unless you work for one of the best executive protection agencies, you should be prepared to step into different roles depending on the client and the situation.

Typical responsibilities of a bodyguard

  • Security driving
  • Close quarter protection
  • Firearms handling
  • First aid
  • Counter-surveillance
  • Planning and research
  • Threat and risk assessment

In addition to all the core responsibilities mentioned above, a professional executive protection officer will also have to work for long hours and in high-stress situations. If you wish to work for regular hours, then this line of work is not for you.

As a bodyguard, you need to be easy to work with, good at taking orders, and excellent at acquiring new skills. If you have these qualities, then you can consider becoming a professional bodyguard.
