Édouard Vuillard studied art at the Académie Julian from 1886 to 1888 and continued his learning process at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Édouard Vuillard joined Les Nabis, the group of art students who were determined to experiment with art and express their artistic tendencies with an avant-garde approach. The group was formed including Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Sérusier, Ker-Xavier Roussel, and Félix Vallotton in 1889. The band of artists called themselves Les Nabis. The term ‘Nabis’ is the Hebrew for “Prophets.” The group had drawn their inspirations from the Synthetist paintings created by Paul Gauguin during his Pont-Aven period. These artists followed the footsteps of Gauguin. The group Les Nabis went about advocating a symbolic approach to colours rather than the preexisting naturalistic approach. Their practice was to apply colour upon the canvas in a way that would emphasize the flat surface of the canvas.
One of Édouard Vuillard’s works titled, “Public Gardens” (1894) consisted of a series of nine vertical decorative panels, and each of them was specifically characterized by his mature work as a Nabi. This approach was very much common among the artists of the group. Les Nabi supported the idea of decoration nd followed the decorative motifs through their art. This was a commission for Édouard Vuillard to create a series as panels which will be installed in a private home. These panels Édouard Vuillard used to portray women and children in many scenes taken out from the public gardens of Paris. He chose to avoid modeling rather he applied the colours and paints in distinct areas of patterned colors for example he used soft shades of green, blue, and brown—which produced a two-dimensional, effect that of tapestries.
