Jageshwar is an important place of pilgrimage for Hindus. An important centre of Shaivism, it attracts tourist from different states of India. The city is home to 124 temples, most of which are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The major tourist hotspots in Jageshwar are the Jageshwar Mahadev Temple, Dandeshwar Shiv Temple, Sri Mahamritunjaya Temple and Pushti Devi Temple. The Jageshwar Mahadev Temple is a major landmark of the town.

Locals believe that the shiv linga here is one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Jataganga river flows through the complex of the temple. The Akhand Jyoti (burning flame) is an exceptional feature of this temple. Shiva is worshipped in the form of Nagesh here. According to legends, once Lord Shiva came to meditate here. When the women of the village came to know this they left their household work to come and seek his blessings. When the men heard about this, they were furious and came to meet the hermit who had enthralled their women.

Looking at the chaos, Shiva took the form of a child and he is still worshipped in this form here. The Dandeshwar Shiv Temple is famous for its lingam which is a natural rock. The lingam at Sri Mahamritunjaya temple has an eye shaped opening and is worshipped as a savior from death. Jageshwar temples are known for their ‘nagara’ style of architecture which is different from the architecture in other parts of India. It is widely believed that Adiguru Shankaracharya came here on his way to Kedarnath and renovated many of these temples. The major festivals celebrated here are Mahashivratri which is celebrated in spring, between February and March, and Jageshwar Monsoon Festival usually in August. The best season to be here is in summer, between April and June when the weather is mild.

The town is connected with other cities of north India by road, railways and air. The nearest railway station is in Kathgodam, 125 km from here.
