Is Your Motorcycle Insured?

by Kristen White Blogger
Motorcycle accidents can cause very serious injuries to motorcyclists. Unfortunately, many motorcycle riders only realise the need for insurance coverage after they have been seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident. For those who do take out motorcycle insurance they come to learn the hard truth of having inadequate insurance coverage. This article will discuss the importance of motorcycle insurance and the type of motorcycle insurance that must be taken out.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 4 668 people died in motorcycle accidents in 2013. In the same year about 88 000 motorcyclists sustained injuries in motorcycle accidents. While anyone can be injured in a car accident, motorcyclists have 26 times more likelihood of being injured in an accident as compared to a person who is a passenger in a vehicle. Therefore, there is a much higher risk associated with motorcyclists in comparison to other road users.

As with other types of vehicle accidents such as plane accident in Wasilla , there are various reasons why a motorcyclist may be injured in a vehicle accident. The most common form of accidents occurs when the passenger vehicle hits the front of the motorcycle. The reasons behind this could be that the driver of the passenger vehicle did not see or was not looking for motorcyclists. Many accidents happen when a passenger vehicle is making a left turn while the motorcycle is part of ongoing traffic and is going straight through an intersection. However, in some cases accidents involve only the motorcyclist and a fixed object. Other key reasons for motorcycle accidents is inadequate training and a lack of experience, lane splitting, speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol.

Common injuries associated with motorcycle accidents includes trauma to the brain and spine. Serious injuries in a motorcycle accident occur because of the limited amount of protection that motorcyclists receive from clothing and a helmet. Traumatic brain injuries, concussions, spinal injuries, fractures, road rash, and amputations are common motorcycle injuries.

‘Most automotive insurance policies specifically prohibit coverage for the insured’s motorcycle accident under a regular policy. Motorcyclists most often purchase separate insurance to cover their motorcycle.’ A motorcyclist may be able to secure the necessary liability coverage required by the state law but they may also be able to purchase the following insurance coverage:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - this covers an insured’s medical bills regardless of who was at fault for the accident. The insurance coverage covers medical bills up to the policy limit. Note that PIP also covers the insured’s lost wages and can also be used by a passenger on the bike to cover their expenses.

  • Underinsured or uninsured coverage - this pays for the insured’s medical expenses up to the policy limit in the event that the driver at fault for the accident does not have insurance or has an insufficient amount of insurance.

  • Property damage coverage - this coverage can help pay for the repairs of the motorcycle or replacement of another vehicle.
